Granada: Is It Worth Visiting, Alhambra Tickets and How Many Days

Granada is worth it for the Alhambra, the Albaicín and the tapas served free with drinks in most bars. Give it 2 days, and book Alhambra tickets as soon as you know your dates: they go on sale up to three months ahead and the Nasrid Palaces have a fixed entry time. Direct trains from Madrid take 3 h 23 to 3 h 41.

Is Granada worth visiting?

Yes, if the Alhambra is on your list. The Alhambra, the Generalife and the Albaicín form one UNESCO World Heritage site, listed in 1984 and extended in 1994. UNESCO describes the Alhambra and Generalife as an exceptional testimony to Muslim Spain in the 13th to 15th centuries (UNESCO).

Granada is a smaller city than Seville, with about 233,500 people (Wikipedia). It suits you if you like history, hill walks and long tapas evenings. It suits you less if you can’t book the Alhambra ahead or don’t like steep cobbled streets: the Albaicín sits on a hill north of the Darro river (Wikipedia).

The route for each ticket is on the types of visit page. Children under 12 go free but still need a ticket issued with the adults’. Reduced prices need official proof on the day (prices page).

The Nasrid Palaces have a fixed entry time. Capacity is 300 people every half an hour. If you’re not at the Nasrid Palaces entrance at the time on your ticket, you won’t be allowed in. The rest of the site can be visited at any time during opening hours (Alhambra FAQ). The slot is set when you buy and can’t be changed (Spain.info).

How far ahead: tickets go on sale up to three months in advance, and there is “no guarantee of availability” (Spain.info). The Alhambra says it may limit sales and recommends buying in advance (prices page). We couldn’t find an official figure for how many weeks ahead dates sell out.

Other rules: tickets are personal; bring the passport or ID card used for the booking. The name can be changed up to the day before. Date and time can’t be changed, and purchases are final (Alhambra FAQ).

Opening hours: daytime visits run 08:30–18:00 from 15 October to 31 March and 08:30–20:00 from 1 April to 14 October. Closed 25 December and 1 January (official hours). If official tickets are gone, guided tours that include tickets (below) are another way in.

What to see

  • The Alhambra. Alcazaba fortress, Nasrid Palaces and the Generalife gardens. The general visit takes around three hours (Alhambra FAQ). See the ticket section above.
  • The Albaicín and the Mirador de San Nicolás. The old Moorish quarter, part of the UNESCO site. UNESCO says its architecture and street plan are the most remarkable survival of Andalusí culture (UNESCO). The square by the church of San Nicolás is a lookout with views of the Alhambra (Wikipedia).
  • Sacromonte. Hillside cave houses facing the Alhambra, home to Granada’s Romani community since after 1492. The zambra form of flamenco originated here (Wikipedia).
  • Royal Chapel (Capilla Real). Burial place of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon (Capilla Real). Closed on Good Friday, 25 December and 1 January; check visit times before you go.
  • Granada Cathedral. Next to the Royal Chapel. Visits are not possible during services and times can change without notice; see the official prices and hours.
  • Andalusian monuments. El Bañuelo, Corral del Carbón, Casa Horno de Oro and Palacio de Dar al-Horra share one ticket at €8.48, free on Sundays (official prices, checked 14 October 2026).
  • Tapas. In most bars a free tapa comes with each drink. The tourism office lists areas such as Calle Navas, Bib-Rambla, the Albaicín and Realejo (Granada tourism office).

How many days

2 days. Day one: the Alhambra, built around your Nasrid Palaces slot. Day two: the Albaicín, Sacromonte, the Royal Chapel and the Cathedral, then tapas. Add a third day for a trip to the Alpujarra villages. Combining Granada with Seville and Madrid? See our itineraries.

How far in advance should I book Alhambra tickets?

As soon as you know your dates. Tickets can be bought up to three months ahead and availability isn't guaranteed (Spain.info). Same-day tickets at the ticket office are subject to availability, and once bought you can't change the date or time (Alhambra FAQ).
