San Sebastián: Is It Worth Visiting, and How Many Days?
San Sebastián suits people who travel for food and the sea: the Old Town's pintxo bars are a short walk from La Concha bay. Two to three days covers the bay, both hills and the San Telmo museum, with time for a pintxos crawl each evening. Direct trains from Madrid take about 5½ hours; the nearest airports are San Sebastián (in Hondarribia, 22 km away) and Bilbao. Skip it if you need reliable sunshine: it rains on about 141 days a year.

San Sebastián, Donostia in Basque, sits on the Bay of Biscay about 20 km from the French border. It has 188,487 people (2024) and three city beaches: La Concha, Ondarreta and Zurriola (Wikipedia).
Is San Sebastián worth visiting?
Yes, for most first-time visitors who like food. The Old Town (Parte Vieja) is packed with pintxo bars, and it opens straight onto the harbour and La Concha bay. Everything below is walkable.
It suits couples, food lovers and anyone combining Spain with south-west France. It suits less well if you want a long list of major museums, or guaranteed sun. Annual rainfall at the Igeldo weather station averages 1,507 mm, with rain on about 141 days a year (AEMET, 1981–2010 normals).
What to see
- La Concha bay and promenade. The beach is 1,500 metres of sand, and the white Concha railing along the promenade is one of the city’s symbols. You can swim out towards Santa Clara island all year (San Sebastián Turismo).
- The Old Town (Parte Vieja). The city’s historic core was walled until 1863 (Wikipedia). This is where most pintxo bars are. The pintxos tours on this page start here.
- Basilica of Santa María del Coro. A Baroque church completed in 1774, at the end of Nagusia street in the Old Town (Wikipedia).
- Monte Urgull. The hill above the Old Town rises to 123 m. Mota Castle sits on top, with a history museum run by San Telmo, and a 12 m statue of Christ was added in 1950 (Wikipedia).
- San Telmo Museoa. The museum of Basque society, in a 16th-century Dominican convent at the foot of Urgull, with a 2011 extension (Wikipedia). Tickets €10, reduced €4, free on Tuesdays and for under-25s. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–20:00 from April to October and 10:00–19:00 from November to March (San Telmo Museoa, checked 14 October 2026).
- Monte Igueldo funicular. The wooden funicular has run for more than 100 years. A return ticket costs €5.50 for adults and €2.50 for children up to 7, and includes entry to the hilltop grounds; a single is €4.00 (Monte Igueldo, checked 14 October 2026). It isn’t wheelchair-accessible.
- Peine del Viento (Comb of the Wind). Three iron sculptures by Eduardo Chillida, installed in 1977 on the rocks at the end of Ondarreta beach, below Monte Igueldo. The architect Luis Peña Ganchegui designed the granite terraces around them (Tourism Euskadi).
- Gros and Zurriola beach. Across the river from the Old Town, Gros is built on former sandy ground. The Kursaal congress centre overlooks Zurriola beach (Wikipedia).
How many days
Two to three days. Day one: the Old Town, Santa María del Coro, Monte Urgull and San Telmo, then pintxos in the evening. Day two: walk La Concha to Ondarreta and the Peine del Viento, then take the funicular up Monte Igueldo. A third day leaves room for a cider house, the coast to Getaria, or a day trip to Bilbao.

Frequently asked questions
Is San Sebastián worth visiting?
Yes, if food and the coast are what you're after. The pintxo bars of the Old Town, La Concha beach and the views from Monte Igueldo and Monte Urgull are all within walking distance of each other. It has fewer big-ticket monuments than Madrid or Seville, and it rains a lot: about 1,500 mm a year at the Igeldo weather station (AEMET).
How many days do you need in San Sebastián?
Two to three days. One day for the Old Town, Monte Urgull and the San Telmo museum; one for La Concha, the Peine del Viento and the Monte Igueldo funicular; and a third if you want a cider house, the coast to Getaria, or a day in Bilbao.
Do I need to book a pintxos tour in advance?
You don't need a tour to eat pintxos: bars in the Old Town serve them at the counter. A guided tour helps if you don't speak Spanish or want a local to choose the bars. The two we list run about 3 hours and cost from €103 and €131 per person (GetYourGuide, checked 14 October 2026). Book a few days ahead if your dates are fixed, especially in summer.
How do I get to San Sebastián from Madrid or Barcelona?
From Madrid, Renfe runs three direct trains a day between Madrid Chamartín and San Sebastián, taking 5 hours 25 minutes to 5 hours 37 minutes (Renfe timetable for 21 October 2026).seat61.com/international-trains/trains-from-San-Sebastian.htm)). From Barcelona Sants, there's one direct Renfe Alvia a day, taking about 6 hours 15 to 6 hours 45 minutes (Everyrail). Check times on renfe.com before you book.
