Where to Stay in Spain's 8 Best Cities: Areas and Hotels
In each city, stay in or next to the old centre, so the main sights are a walk away and you only need transport for the station. That means the Barrio de las Letras in Madrid, the Eixample in Barcelona, the cathedral area in Seville, the Albaicín in Granada and the old town in Valencia and Málaga. In San Sebastián, stay between the Old Town and La Concha bay; in Bilbao, in Abando near the Guggenheim.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay in Madrid for a first visit?
The Barrio de las Letras, between Puerta del Sol and the Paseo del Prado. It puts the Prado and Sol within walking distance. Our pick there, the Gran Hotel Inglés, is near Plaza de Santa Ana.
Where should I stay in Barcelona?
The Eixample, the 19th- and early 20th-century district between the old city and Gràcia (Wikipedia). Its main avenue, Passeig de Gràcia, has two of the Gaudí buildings on UNESCO's list, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà (UNESCO). For a deeper Barcelona guide, see I Love Catalonia.
Is it worth staying in the Albaicín in Granada?
Yes, if you don't mind hills. The Albaicín sits on a hill above the Darro river, largely keeps its medieval street plan (Wikipedia) and is part of the Alhambra's UNESCO World Heritage listing. From the hill you look across to the Alhambra.
Where is the best place to stay in San Sebastián?
In the centre, between the Old Town (Parte Vieja), with its pintxo bars, and La Concha beach. Everything is in walking distance. San Sebastián is a low-emission zone and you need a permit to drive in the city, so don't bring a car if you can help it (Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra, checked 14 October 2026).
